Characteristics of the substance Sodium alginate

Alginic acid derivative. Natural polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed.

Pharmacology

pharmachologic effect  - reparative, hemostatic, local anti-inflammatory.

In case of local application, it effectively helps to stop bleeding, eliminate inflammation and speed up healing processes, incl. in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including the anorectal region. Reduced signs of inflammation observed on the 7th day of treatment. On the 14th day, signs of inflammation usually disappear, improvement in the peripheral blood pattern is noted (increased hemoglobin level, red blood cells and a decrease in the number of leukocytes, a decrease in ESR).

Sodium salt of alginic acid

Chemical properties

Sodium Alginate - an organic compound guluronic   and mannuronic acid linked by glycosidic linkages with branching. The natural polysaccharide is a white with a yellow tint powder, sometimes grayish. With water it forms a viscous colloidal solution; it is insoluble in alcohol and org. solvents. Depending on the number n, the molar mass varies from 32 to 600 thousand grams per mole. Acids of this kind are obtained from algae by treating the raw material with alkali solutions.

Substance applied:

  • in the food industry as a gelling and thickening agent E401 , is a part of some desserts, homemade cheeses, cottage cheese products, sauces, canned products, ice cream;
  • in perfumery and cosmetics;
  • in the manufacture of certain drugs as a water-holding agent and thickener or as an active ingredient for local use.

Sodium Alginate Harm

When applying the drug topically or externally, it does not cause harm. Sodium Alginate is actively used in cosmetology, pharmacology and food industry. Substance is allowed in most countries of the world, including Russia and Ukraine. The tool does not cause allergic reactions, does not irritate the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. However, recent studies show that the systematic use of this chemical compound in food slows down the absorption of beneficial trace elements, iron, magnesium, calcium, and so on. The body does not receive enough vitamins and minerals that can affect health.

pharmachologic effect

Hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, reparative.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Sodium Alginate has anti-inflammatory and reparative effects. Effectively stops bleeding, accelerates healing processes, reduces inflammation. Significant improvements occur after a week of systematic use of the drug, after 2 weeks the indices of the peripheral blood system improve, the level rises and decreases. ESR .

Indications for use

The drug is used:

  • for treatment anal fissures , proctosigmoiditis bleeding;
